I would love to compound the Book of Dead Names with references to its own becoming. What's the deal with him? There's an additional level of interest there as John Dee is often considered to be the model for Prospero.īierce & Chambers' Hastur is in there, Clark Ashton Smith will get his allusions, Arthur Machen, and so on. The creature illustrations, for example, could be credited to an unpublished Opium Beastiary of Thomas de Quincy, who had visions the creatures about which he read in Dee's Necronomicon fragments. The Book of Dead Names Project will include some of those fragments, as well as other collections of work that they inspired between John Dee's translation (1583 for our purposes, the year that the historical Dee fled England in the dead of night to become a roving alchemist), and the "publication" of our Book of Dead Names in 1890.

In the Dunwich Horror, there exists a copy of the Dee Necronomicon with over a thousand pages, so Dee's 'fragments' were substantial. In Lovecraft's History of the Necronomicon, he points towards John Dee as having translated fragments of the Necronomicon into English, although he states that the work was never published.
